Commercial General Liability is the base layer of almost every business insurance program. It responds when someone who is not your employee is hurt, or when you damage property that is not yours — the customer who slips in your showroom, the tool your crew drops through a window, the ad campaign a competitor says copied theirs.
What it covers
- Bodily injury to customers, visitors, and members of the public
- Damage you cause to property belonging to others
- Personal and advertising injury — libel, slander, copyright in your advertising
- Legal defense costs, paid in addition to your limit on most forms
- Products and completed operations — claims arising after a job is finished
What it does not cover
Stated plainly, because finding out at claim time is how people end up suing their broker.
- Injuries to your own employees — that is Workers' Compensation
- Damage to your own building, equipment, or stock — that is Business Property
- Vehicles you own or operate — that is Commercial Auto
- Professional advice or design errors — that needs Professional Liability
